Setting Up Phantom Wallet (The Right Way)

Phantom is the most popular wallet for Solana. It's where you'll store your SOL and tokens, and it's how you'll connect to DEXes like Jupiter to make trades. Getting it set up correctly takes 5 minutes - but doing it wrong can cost you everything.

This guide will walk you through the setup process, explain what each step really means, and make sure you understand how to protect yourself.

The Most Important Thing

Your seed phrase (12 words) is not a password. It IS your wallet. Anyone with these words can take everything you own. Phantom support will never ask for it. No legitimate site will ever ask for it. If someone asks for your seed phrase, it's a scam - 100% of the time.

What You'll Need

Step-by-Step Setup

1

Download Phantom from the Official Site

Go to phantom.app - type it directly in your browser. Don't click links from emails, Discord, or Twitter. There are many fake Phantom sites designed to steal your money.

2

Create a New Wallet

After installation, open Phantom and click "Create a new wallet". You'll be asked to create a password.

Password vs Seed Phrase

Your password is like a lock on your front door. Your seed phrase is the deed to your house. If someone has your password, they can access Phantom on that specific device. If someone has your seed phrase, they own your wallet from anywhere in the world.

3

Write Down Your Seed Phrase

Phantom will show you 12 words. This is your seed phrase. Write these words on paper in the exact order shown.

Never Do These Things

Do NOT screenshot your seed phrase. Do NOT save it in a notes app. Do NOT email it to yourself. Do NOT store it in cloud storage. Do NOT type it into any website except Phantom itself. Hackers specifically search for seed phrases in photos, notes, and cloud storage.

4

Verify Your Seed Phrase

Phantom will ask you to confirm your seed phrase by selecting words in order. This proves you wrote it down correctly.

If you get it wrong, go back and check your paper. Getting one word wrong means you can never recover your wallet.

5

You're Done!

Your wallet is now created. You'll see your wallet address (a long string starting with a letter or number). This is like your account number - you can share this with people who want to send you crypto.

Safe to Share

Your wallet address is public. It's safe to share. People can only SEND you crypto with it, not take anything. Think of it like an email address.

Where to Store Your Seed Phrase

Your seed phrase is the most valuable thing in crypto. If you lose it and your phone breaks or you forget your password, your crypto is gone forever. If someone finds it, they can take everything.

Safe Storage

  • Paper in a fireproof safe
  • Metal seed phrase backup (fireproof)
  • Safety deposit box at a bank
  • Split between two secure locations

Dangerous Storage

  • Screenshots on your phone
  • Notes app or text file
  • Email or cloud storage
  • Under your keyboard

Understanding What Just Happened

When you created your wallet, here's what actually happened:

This means if you delete Phantom, your crypto is still safe. If you lose your phone, your crypto is still there. You can install Phantom on a new device, enter your seed phrase, and access everything.

What If I Lose My Phone?

No problem! Here's what to do:

  1. Download Phantom on your new device
  2. Click "I already have a wallet"
  3. Enter your 12-word seed phrase
  4. Set a new password for the app
  5. Your wallet (with all your crypto) is back

This is why protecting your seed phrase is so important - it's the only way to recover your wallet.

Common Questions

Can I use Phantom on multiple devices?

Yes! Install Phantom on any device and enter the same seed phrase. You'll see the same wallet with the same crypto on all devices.

What if I forget my Phantom password?

No problem. Uninstall Phantom, reinstall it, and use your seed phrase to restore your wallet. You'll set a new password during this process.

Should I use biometrics (Face ID/fingerprint)?

Yes, it's convenient and secure. It's just an easier way to enter your password - it doesn't replace your seed phrase.

How do I receive crypto?

Click "Receive" in Phantom to see your wallet address. Share this address (or the QR code) with whoever is sending you crypto.
