Jupiter is the most popular DEX (decentralized exchange) on Solana. It's where you'll swap SOL for other tokens. Unlike Coinbase or Binance, there's no account to create - you just connect your wallet and trade.
This guide will walk you through your first swap, explaining each step and the interface along the way.
What You Need
A Phantom wallet with some SOL in it. Even 0.1 SOL is enough to practice with.
Why Jupiter?
Jupiter aggregates liquidity from many sources, so you get the best price. Instead of checking multiple DEXes yourself, Jupiter does it automatically. It's like a search engine for swaps - it finds you the best deal.
Step-by-Step: Making Your First Swap
Go to Jupiter
Open jup.ag in your browser. Type it directly - don't click links from Discord, Twitter, or emails. Phishing sites look identical to the real thing.
Verify the URL
Always check you're on jup.ag - scammers create fake sites like jup-swap.com or jupiter.finance. Bookmark the real site after your first visit.
Connect Your Wallet
Click the "Connect Wallet" button in the top right. Select Phantom from the list. Phantom will pop up asking you to approve the connection.
This is safe - connecting your wallet only lets Jupiter see your address and request transactions. It can't take anything without your approval.
Understand the Swap Interface
Jupiter's swap interface has two main boxes:
Select Your Tokens
Click on each token to change it. Let's say you want to swap SOL for USDC (a stablecoin worth $1):
- Top box: Select SOL (should be default)
- Bottom box: Search for USDC and select it
Enter how much SOL you want to swap. Jupiter will show how much USDC you'll receive.
Starting Safe
For your first trade, swap a small amount (0.01 SOL = about $2-3) to USDC. This is a safe, low-risk way to learn. You can always swap back.
Check Slippage Settings
Click the settings gear icon. Slippage is the maximum price change you'll accept between clicking "Swap" and the transaction completing.
| Slippage | Best For | Risk |
|---|---|---|
| 0.1% - 0.5% | Stablecoins, large tokens | May fail if price moves |
| 1% - 3% | Most tokens | Usually works, small loss possible |
| 5% - 15% | Small/volatile tokens | Higher loss if price changes |
For USDC, 0.5% is fine. For small meme coins, you might need 5-10%.
Execute the Swap
Click "Swap". Phantom will pop up showing the transaction details:
- What you're sending
- What you're receiving (approximate)
- Network fee (usually < $0.01)
Review and click "Approve" in Phantom.
Wait for Confirmation
Solana is fast - usually 1-5 seconds. You'll see a success message with a link to view the transaction on Solscan (a blockchain explorer).
Congratulations!
You just made your first DEX trade. The tokens are now in your wallet. You can see them in Phantom.
Understanding What Just Happened
Unlike trading on Coinbase:
- No account needed - Jupiter doesn't know who you are
- You kept custody - tokens went directly from your wallet to another smart contract and back
- No middle man - the swap was executed by code on the blockchain
- Public transaction - anyone can see the swap on Solscan (but they don't know it's you)
Finding New Tokens
Jupiter lists thousands of tokens, but not everything. To find a token:
- Search by name or ticker (like "BONK")
- Or paste the contract address (the token's unique ID)
Be Careful with Unknown Tokens
Anyone can create a token. Scammers create fake tokens with the same name as popular ones. Always verify the contract address on DexScreener or Birdeye before buying.
Common Issues
Transaction Failed
Usually means slippage was too low and the price moved. Increase slippage and try again.
"Insufficient SOL for Fee"
You need a tiny amount of SOL (~0.001) for transaction fees. Make sure you don't swap ALL your SOL.
Token Not Showing in Wallet
Phantom might not auto-detect new tokens. Click the refresh button or add the token manually using its contract address.
Swap Button Grayed Out
Check that you've connected your wallet and have enough balance for what you're trying to swap.
Tips for Better Trading
- Check price impact - If it's over 1%, you might be trading too much for the liquidity
- Compare rates - Jupiter usually finds the best, but occasionally checking Raydium directly helps
- Use limit orders - Jupiter offers limit orders (click "Limit" tab) to buy at your target price
- Keep SOL for fees - Always leave 0.1 SOL for transactions
